He spotted me, a likely candidate for his antics.

The cute chipmunk ran over to me, posing for pictures, hoping for some crumbs in return.

I was not falling for it. Though he would eat my food, it doesn’t have the nutrients he needs. Also, animals that have easy access to human food, forget how to scavenge for the food themselves. If circumstances cause the humans to disappear from the area, they will starve.

What am I feeding on?

I thought about Paul’s warning to the Hebrews in 5:11-14.

We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!  Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.  But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

What am I consuming? Easy Instagram scripture quotes? Do I depend on easy, five-minute devotions? Only praying at meals? I am not saying those things are bad, but do they give me the spiritual nutrients I need? In a time of isolation, loss of power, or other disaster, will I have the ability to dig into the Word myself? Or have I become too dependent on spiritual scraps under a picnic table?

As we travel with the Father, let’s not depend on the crumbs underneath the table. Let’s do the hard work of foraging for God’s truth.

Dear God,
Give me a hunger for your Word. Help me not to rely only on what other people say about you, but what you yourself say.
Amen
