Lake of the Clouds Overlook

Are you looking for something to do the day you arrive at Porcupine Wilderness State Park, but you don’t have much time? Consider Lake of the Clouds Overlook. In addition to hiking the Union Mine Trail, we also drove to the Lake of the Clouds Overlook on our first day at Porcupine Wilderness State Park.

The parking lot is about ten miles or so past Union Bay Campground on the 107th Engineers Memorial Parkway. Part of the road is not suitable for trailers, so it is best if you drop your trailer at the campground before you take this hike. They have an entrance station that is sometimes manned that will check to make sure you have your Michigan Recreation Passport.

The parking lot can get quite crowded as many trails start in the area.

One of the viewpoints is accessible by a boardwalk and another by a paved trail. You can make a loop by combining the viewpoints.

You can also hike down to the lake on a 1.4-mile out and back trail. If you need more information about that hike, you can find it here. Some of the best views of the lake are on the Escarpment Trail, which I will describe in a later post.

The viewpoint trail is an excellent one to do the day you arrive. We chose to do this and the Union Mine Trail on our first day. Next week, I will describe a perfect day trip from Porcupine Wilderness State Park.
