Hiking the Union Mine Trail

We chose to take the Union Mine Trail as our introductory hike in Porcupine Wilderness State Park. This is the first trail you come to after the visitor center. This moderate 1.1 mile loop trail provides you insight into the life of a miner in the 1850’s. You will encounter ten different interpretive displays with journal entries and photographs from the time period as you walk the trail.

As you continue on the trail, you will also walk by a stream with a few very small waterfalls.

You begin the hike by going downhill, then cross the main road, and finish the hike going uphill.

I would highly recommend this trail as a good introductory hike for the area. The scenery is beautiful, and you will learn some of the history of the area on this short trail. This hike proved to be the perfect choice for the day we checked into the campsite! We also visited the Lake of the Clouds viewpoints on the same day. You can read about that here.
