Worrying? Look at a field of flowers!

Do you have a problem with worry? Try looking at a field of flowers.

A few weeks after I received the phone call from my mom about her stage 4 cancer diagnosis, Charity Hermann, a worship leader/songwriter, came out with a new album, Honest. Her whole album spoke to me, but especially a song entitled “Field of Flowers” that was taken from this passage:

26 Look at the birds in the sky: They do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you more valuable than they are? 27 And which of you by worrying can add even one hour to his life? 28 Why do you worry about clothing? Think about how the flowers of the field grow; they do not work or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these! 30 And if this is how God clothes the wild grass, which is here today and tomorrow is tossed into the fire to heat the oven, won’t he clothe you even more, you people of little faith? Matthew 6:26-30

So I claimed it as my theme verse and God took away all the worry I had about my mom as I took care of her…

Not quite. Often, I think we feel like sharing our faith means we need to wrap our stories up in a perfect package, where all the loose ends are tied up in a pretty Christian bow.

More often than not, my faith testimony looks more like a present in a Walmart sack. Here is the real testimony about worry and my mom’s illness.

The Journey

My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer Labor Day of 2021, and we held her funeral Labor Day of 2022. I worried a lot that year. My husband and I had so many conversations about my letting go of what I could not control. I played “Field of Flowers” over and over, trying to help myself to remember not to worry.  Also, God put flowers in my path wherever we went, especially in the weeks leading up to her death.

Did I still worry that year? Yes.

However, I also had a deep sense that the Father saw me, loved me, and was walking through that year with me.

If you find yourself worrying as you travel with the Father, find a field of flowers or listen to this song and be reminded of God’s provisions for you.
