Today’s Tip: The Walkaround

Today, I want to share a travel tip, especially for those who travel in an RV, though it might be helpful if you use other methods as well. Every time we stop, whether it if for gas, a restroom break or a picnic, Mike walks around the RV to check and make sure everything is ok right before we leave.

Like many habits, this one was partially birthed from mistakes. Back in 2012 when we took our first trip with the RV, we stopped and enjoyed a picnic lunch with our 3 kids. We got back in the car and stopped for gas just a few miles down the road. To our horror, we discovered a giant hole in the front of the RV. We had forgotten to put the truck’s tailgate up, so when we turned into the gas station, the tail gate went into the cargo door in the front.  OOPS.

A simple walkaround right before we left could have prevented it.

Although he had always done these walkarounds when we stopped, he made sure to do this right before we left. He looks at the tires, the hitch, the windows, etc. This habit paid off several times this year. Last spring, he discovered part of the roof ripped when we unknowingly went too close under a tree. He got his roof patch and fixed it.

Just this week, he discovered that our holder and license plate on the RV had broken off. Thankfully, we were still in Texas, so we stopped into the tax office in Amarillo and got a new plate. Then, we drove to an RV dealer to get a new holder. Without Mike’s walkaround, we might have been stopped in Colorado for our missing plates.

Just a simple tip today, but one that can hopefully save you from some mishaps. Speaking of mishaps, if you are new to the blog, you may have missed this blog post and funny video about our trip we tried to make to Colorado a few years ago.

Also, check out yesterday’s Instagram showing Mike escorting a bird out of the RV.
