Prophetstown: Base Camp for Family Fun and Outdoor Adventure

Are you looking for a place to camp in Indiana for family fun and outdoor adventure? Check out Prophetstown State Park, Indiana’s newest state park.

WARNING: GPS Issues

We drove to this park from Indiana Dunes State Park, and our GPS got pretty confused. Do not rely on yours! You need to make sure that you use the directions from the official website . You can get to the visitor center from the main road or from the campground. However, you cannot get from the main road to the campground from road 225, which is the way your GPS will probably send you. You must use Exit 178/S.R. 43 north of Lafayette to access the park. The visitor center is very small but has some nice displays for the children.

Native Village

To visit the remains of the Native American village, you should park at the visitor center and walk across the street. Tecumseh moved here after being forced out of Ohio. He used this area as a base of operations to organize an alliance with other tribes to regain their lands and stop the encroachment by the white settlers. You will find a few buildings and displays describing the Native Americans who once thrived in this area.

Campground

One side of the campground has 55 full hookup sites in the trees. The sites are well-spaced, and the dogwood trees were spectacular while we were there.

The other side of the campground has 55 electric-only sites. These sites get much more full sun. However, they also have wonderful views of the prairie surrounding this part of the campground.

Sunrise

The far end of the electric section of the campground is a perfect place to sit and watch the sunrise. This section was pretty deserted in the middle of the week when we visited.

Facilities

This campground has a large bathroom/shower facility in the electric loop. You will find a playground near the entrance to the full hook-up campground, and two others spread throughout in the park. They have a dump station and a place to fill your rig with water. I loved that they actually had containers for recycling!

They also have an Aquatic Center that runs between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Your family can cool off on a hot summer day with the tube slide, body flume, zero entry pool, lazy river, and an activity pool with basketball. They also provide restrooms, lockers, showers, a changing area, and a concession stand.

Activities

Within the state park, you will find a long biking trail and several hiking trails. Though not an official part of the state park, The Farm located inside the park is a great place to spend several hours. The Tippecanoe Battlefield & Museum is a short drive away as well. I will be reviewing all of those places in future blog posts.

If you are looking for family fun that is a little different than the usual state park, Propheststown State Park fits the bill. Whether your family likes swimming in a waterpark, hiking through a prairie, feeding cows and chickens, or exploring historic sites, this park is your place for outdoor adventure.
