A Visitor’s Review of Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

Indiana Dunes National Park surrounds Indiana Dunes State Park. We chose to camp in the State Park rather than the National Park because the sites were bigger and they had electricity. Here is a visitor’s review of the campground.

Facilities

The campground has an East Loop and a West Loop. Each loop has a large bathhouse with toilets and shower areas. Each loop also has a small playground for children. They also have a pull-through section for you to fill up with water between the two loops, convenient and out of the way of other campers driving around. In many other campgrounds we have visited, you block the road when you need to fill up your water tank. They also have a nice nature center with exhibits, live animals, and frequent ranger programs.

The campsites are nicely spaced, especially the ones that back up to the dunes. The ones in the center of the campground are closer together.

Indiana Dunes State Park Trails

This campground gives you many hiking opportunities. If you camp in the East Loop, you will be closer to the Nature Center with trails 8, 9, and 10. In the West Loop, you will be closer to the Beach Trail. The trail to Mount Tom is in the middle between the two loops.

Other: National Park, Chesterton, Chicago

As I mentioned, this park is surrounded by Indiana Dunes National Park, so you can easily drive to the hikes and attractions there. The nearby town of Chesterton is a great place to do laundry, shop, or eat in historic downtown. Also, Chicago is just over an hour away if you want to visit the bigger city without your trailer for the day.

We highly recommend this park to explore the Indiana Dunes area!
