Need a Fun Day Trip? Try New Fishers Peak State Park

Last time, I talked about camping and hiking in Trinidad Lake State Park. A great day trip from that park is the newly formed Fishers Peak State Park. The park is only open sunrise to sunset. There is no camping and no office there. You pay your entrance fee at a kiosk next to the sign.

When we visited in August, the sunflowers were prolific, especially at the beginning of the trail and in the picnic area.

Hiking

They have extended the trails since we visited, and there are currently more than 13 miles of trails to choose from. Here is a list of the various trails, and here is a pdf map of the various trails available now.

Discovery Trail

This trail is very short, with displays around the picnic tables.

Challenge Section

They have expanded and changed the names of the trails since our visit. We walked the First Look trail, which I believe is now part of the Challenge Hill Section. This trail had us hiking through groves of trees and shrubs.

Osita Ridge Section

I believe the other section we hiked was the very beginning part of the Osita Ridge section of the hike.

This trail was definitely much more in the open and on a road, rather than hiking through the underbrush like the other one. Make sure you wear sunscreen and a hat.

We look forward to exploring this more on a return trip. Eventually, you will be able to hike to the peak. You can also hunt for turkeys, elk, deer, and bear at certain times of the year with a permit. We spent a morning enjoying our hiking, but the trails have expanded so that you could either spend all day or multiple days exploring the expanded trails. I would definitely recommend taking a day trip to hike in this beautiful area.
