Enjoy Fishing? Try Martin Creek Lake State Park

Martin Creek Lake State Park is one of the few state parks with a power plant on its shores, which keeps the waters warm, even in the winter. This 286-acre park provides opportunities for fishing, camping, hiking, geocaching, and water sports.

Lodging in the Park

You will find a variety of campgrounds in the park: 46 sites with 30 amp electric, 6 with 50 amp, and 12 primitive sites. Here is a map of the entire camp that includes the campgrounds.

The park also provides screened-in shelters with electricity, a lantern post, a picnic table, a fire ring, and an outside water spigot. You should be aware that pets are not allowed in the shelters.

The park has two cabins with heat and electricity. Each of the cabins has 2 double beds, a bathroom, stove, microwave, refrigerator, and outdoor grill. You need to bring your own linens.

They also have two cabins that only have twin beds in them. These cabins have heat and air, but no bathroom or kitchen facilities.

Hiking

You have a variety of hikes to choose from: 1.2 mile Old Henderson Loop, 1.5 Harmony Hill Loop, and the .9 Island Trail. We chose to take the Island Trail the day we visited. You can find a map of the trails here.

Fishing

This park is known for its fishing. You only need a fishing license if you will be fishing from a boat. Texas State Parks don’t require one if you are just fishing from a pier or the shore. Anglers can find tilapia, channel catfish, yellow catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass. You can find out more about fishing here.

They have a nice fish cleaning station. You also have plenty of spots to park your boat

They also have canoes available to rent.

This lake holds a variety of fishing tournaments, which can definitely affect how crowded the lake will be. At this time, the page that features the list of dates seems to be under construction. I would definitely check to make sure you know the dates of upcoming tournaments before you go.

Other Facilities

This park is less than thirty minutes from our house, which makes it a nice choice for a day trip. I recommend this park if you enjoy fishing and want a chance to catch some good size largemouth bass or catfish.
